It was a Friday morning like many before, up by 5am so I could be to Starbucks before 6 to either meet with a friend or to sit and read before heading off to work. As I drove, my favorite disc for the past five months is whirring away in the player. As I approach the parking lot, out through the speakers comes the final few phrases “He who testifieth these things saith, Yea:I come quickly. Amen:come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with the saints. Amen.” At that point the morning of 5.24.13 becomes something more; it marks my fifth time through the New Testament in five months.
Lets go back to late December 2012:
When I was in the jeep going back and forth to work I would listen to music (cd or radio), news, or sports radio. During this time I was coming to believe I needed to be in God’s Word more, I just wasn’t sure how I was going to work that out. Then it hit me, I spend about an hour a day in the car going back and forth to work and I have the Bible on cd so I determined that in the new year I was going to listen to the NT instead of listening to the radio. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I would make it all the way through or not. So on January 2, 2013 I started the jeep and pushed in the first disc and heard “The Gospel of Matthew, chapter one…..” Every morning and evening as I drove to and from work the chapters and books went by then to my amazement I heard the same phrase quoted above and I had completed the NT in just under a month. I spent the last few days between January and February listening to my favorite radio haunts. February 1st came and I started again. This pattern has repeated itself for the past five months with exception of May, for some reason I didn’t want to wait for May 1st to start back through the NT, I actually missed hearing it, I actually longed to hear God’s Word, so I started a few days early. My hope is that this pattern will continue for the foreseeable future. I cannot describe what a blessing it has been and how much I have come to enjoy it.
Will you join me? Find a solid translation of the NT and then next month as you start your journeys in your car, try listening to the Bible for the month and soak up the Word of Truth.
A few thoughts:
– if the CD player in your car plays MP3 the NT will be on one disc and you won’t have to continually change the discs. If you don’t have a CD player in your car you could consider something portable.
– I encourage you to get a solid translation of scripture rather than a paraphrase. NKJV, NASB, NIV, and ESV are good translations.
– Do not be concerned if it takes you more than a month to finish, it is not the amount of time it takes that matters but rather the we are listening to His Word.
– Please continue with or start a devotional time where you read the Word.
