“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:14–21, ESV)
Such a great prayer and one we should emulate as with all of the prayers by Paul.
Some personal thoughts to think through:
This prayer is asking God based upon His glory to strengthen believers:
– not with self determination or self-power but with power of His Spirit.
– “in their inner being” I take this to mean our souls or that which makes you you. It is clear this is not a work on outward character building – true character starts from the inside or from hearts that are change to be like Christ (Romans 8:29) which impacts how we live.
The purpose “so that” of being strengthened by power through the Holy Spirit is that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. Dwell, as I understand, in this text takes on a different understanding than the fact that all believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. This dwelling is a residing or being in charge or Lord. Then as the Lord dwells in our hearts we are given the ability to be rooted and grounded in His love. Verse 18 and 19 speaks to the ability to know the wondrous and massive love of the Lord that passes all human experience. But not just that but that we may be filled with all the fullness of God! Have we ever felt the very fullness of God?
Then in verses 20-21 Paul (or better God after all He is the original writer of Scripture) He reminds us of His ability to, do far more than we could ever imagine “according to His power at work in us.” Beloved what a tremendous truth – God’s power is in us already working toward experiencing His love and fullness.
Wonder what would happen if we prayed for our church this way or if we prayed for ourselves this way. What happens when we pray for our spouse or children this way? May our Heavenly Father lead us through His power through the Holy Spirit that indwells ever y believer has a rich and effective prayer live. And to enjoy the experience of answered prayer!
Truths that we should indeed give him the glory in the church and in Jesus Christ
forever and forever.
