“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,” (Psalm 103:1–2, ESV)

Most commentators agree that this Psalm as written in David’s older years. And he is simply reminding himself about the joy and necessity of blessing his God.

To bless – is to kneel, to worship, to praise, and to give honor and glory to.  What a great Psalm to take into the New Year with us. Life interference so often and we forget this most important devotion we have before the Lord.  If we could remind ourselves first thing in the mornings to begin our day praising God and to continue praising Him throughout the day I am positive our lives would change for the better;  to rest in Him and be secure in His love, grace, and mercy.

Here are some thoughts on what it means to bless the Lord:

To Bless God is to focus:

  • On who He is: 8, 9, 11+17, 13, 14, 19.
  • On what He has done for us: (our benefits)
  • We are forgiven all of all our sin, 3, 10, 12.
  • We are healed, 3
  • We are rescued from the pit, 4.
  • We are surrounded by His love and mercy, 4.
  • We are satisfied and renewed by His goodness, 5

May our great Almighty God remind us all to spend our lives praising and bless our God for the wonderful gift of His son, Who saves all who rests in His work on the cross.

Have a great 2019, as we seek to praise, glorify and bless Him daily.
